AT&T Increases Phone Usability for Blind and Low-Vision Mobile Phone Users

Mobile phone companies are now realizing the welfare of disabled cellphone users. AT&T recently announced two brand new applications that they will incorporate in their phone service for mobile phone users who are blind and for those with eye dysfunction. AT&T has teamed up with Code Factory who is developing the two new applications for their blind/ low vision costumers the Mobile Magnifier and Mobile Speak.

The said two new applications can work for Symbian Series operating devices and Windows Mobile . Mobile Speak is basically a screen reader. It also features a command structure with a matching speech feedback that can work with a number of languages. Braille support is also one of the main features of Mobile Speak. This application could basically convert text into understandable speech with the use of a high-end text to speech engine. Users can then hear such speech through Bluetooth headphones or the phone's speakers. The Mobile Speak can effectively handle communications plus data management that are specially designed for the visually impaired.
Mobile Magnifier, the second application for visually impaired from AT&T, is a magnification application that is compatible for low-resolution and high-resolution screens. It can either be used with a speech feedback or without one. The application would simply magnify the specific area of your phone where you want to read. It can easily be programmed to fit your vision capabilities by simply changing its magnification levels. You can also take advantage of Mobile Magnifier's zoom feature. You may wish to change the borders, colors and sizes of texts and images on your phone according to your preference.
For just $89 you can avail of Mobile Speak and Mobile Magnifier. You can also check the application for yourself before purchase and take advantage of a 30-day trial of these phone applications. You can call the National Center for Costumers with Disabilities at 1-866-241-6568 for more information.

I saw a blurb on this on the news the other day... I'm really impressed by the technology available here- but at the same time, I find it hard to believe this hasn't been available sooner.
