Cellphone Market To Crash in 2009?

A poll by Reuters show that eight of 22 analysts foresee the collapse of the cellular phone market by 2009. This collapse, if it happens, will be the second that the industry will experience since 2001.

It can be remembered that the world cellular phone market was briefly shocked in 2001. That time, replacement sales of cellular phones significantly dropped. As a result, a lot of companies worldwide experienced a huge drop in revenue. In a short span of time, millions of dollars were lost by the likes of Philips, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson. Moreover, thousands of jobs were lost. Even Nokia , the leading cellular company in 2001, experienced a downturn.

In 2009, the same thing is expected to happen. Experts predict revenue to drop like it did eight year ago. However, considering the current economic crisis, the situation could be worse.

In 2001, cellar phone companies managed to survive and recover from the downturn because only the replacement sales were affected. The primary sales of the gadgets were stable. As a matter of fact, it still grew. But in the predicted 2009 crash, both the primary and replacement sales are expected to experience drought.

Demand for cellular phones would definitely be lower than that of the previous years. Because of that, sales would be slower. In fact, Paul Jacobs, a chief executive of Qualcomm, already asserted that in the first two quarters of 2008, their sales already decreased. And he foresees that it will keep on decreasing until next year.

Undoubtedly, this hit on the cellular phone industry would be another economic burden.
